Kickstart An Underground Park in NYC

Earlier this week I attended a lunch and learn session where  Jason McLennan, who is an influential voice in the green building movement, gave a presentation about the Living Building Challenge.  Much of his talk was about how communities can greatly improve their environments by thinking about development in new ways.

This Kickstarter project is a perfect example of a new way of thinking about an old space.  A pair of architects from NYC have come up with a concept for turning an old trolley terminal that is underground into a park underground.

Check out their video which includes some awesome visuals and renderings of the idea.

Q&A With Jill from Jogging Jeans

Image via Jogging Jeans

Jogging Jeans is a blog dedicated to running pictures and funny posts about people doing something very, very strange–jogging in jeans. You know those people you see at the gym rocking the acid-wash denim while working out their arms, or the guy who runs around your neighborhood in jean shorts when it’s forty degrees out–these are the people that Jogging Jeans is bringing into the spotlight.

One of the BlogLocal teams favorite humor blogs, Jogging Jeans features hilarious pictures submitted from around the world and commentary from Jill, a local Pittsburgher, who swears she doesn’t exercise in jeans.

We had the chance to do a quick Q&A with Jill, check it out below.

1.  Why did you decide to start your blog? What was the inspiration for Jogging Jeans?

My husband and I were waiting for the start of a Pittsburgh 5K that started on the Clemente bridge (I think it was the Pittsburgh Charities 5K Home Run). There was a guy in front of us, stretching and looking as if he was preparing to run IN JEANS. We said to each other, “What the heck!?” and “He HAS to be here just waiting for the start of a race with a ‘real’ runner, right?”

When they guy turned around and we saw the race number pinned to his shirt, we started laughing. My husband said, “That would be a good idea for a website – people could send in pictures of people running in jeans.” A few months later, I pulled some pictures off the web and started it just a joke between the two of us. The next thing I know people were submitting photos, Runner’s World was linking to it, and here we are four months and 20,000+ views later.

2. How has the online community influenced Jogging Jeans?

A few high profile sites linked to it which generated a lot of traffic. I have received submissions from all over the world and the feedback has been incredible.

3. What are some of your favorite local blogs?

Pittsburgh has so many really fantastic bloggers. It is of no surprise, really, because there is SO MUCH in this great city to write about.  The top ones that I visit often and consistently are ThatsChurch and IheartPGH. They top my list because they both highlight the fantastic people, events, and things that Pittsburgh has to offer.

But in all honesty, I love to read anything written by people that try to love this city as much as I do. I always say that if there was a  “Who Loves Pittsburgh The Most” contest, I would have the gold, silver, and bronze metals around my neck. I’d have the trophy in one hand and the giant check in the other. I would by jumping from the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place pedestal blocks while all the other contestants hung their heads in shame for thinking they could even come close to loving this place as much as I do. :)

4. Have you ever approached someone jogging in jeans and asked them why they chose denim for their workout?

Not yet! If I saw someone, I would certainly stop and ask them. Then I’d ask for a picture for my blog and give them a hug for being so awesome!

Thanks Jill! To submit a photo to Jogging Jeans, email Jill at joggingjeans@gmail.com.
